LINERNOTES

Born in the USA (1927) and educated in Europe, HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej Rama IX became King of Thailand in 1946. He is held in great respect by his people and abroad, for his many involvements in social and economic development projects, as well as agricultur, religion, history and medicine.
During the 60th Anniversary Celebrations of Bhumibol Adulyadej's Accession to the Throne (2006), he was presented with the first Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

HM King Bhumibol is also known for his royal patronage and support to the arts, literature, architecture and music. Besides being a painter, photographer and writer, HM King Bhumibol is an accomplished jazz musician, playing clarinet and alto saxophone with jazz legends such as Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton and Maynard Ferguson. As a composer he is awarded honorary membership of the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Vienna. In 2003, the University of North Texas College of Music awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Music.

In the year 2011, HM King Bhumibol is celebrating his 84th birthday. A good reason for Dutch jazz tenorist Alexander Beets, connected to several jazz initiatives in The Netherlands (like Amersfoort Jazz, Jazzday, JazzNL Gateway to Global Jazz and Dutch Jazz Expeditions) and the main force behind the Dutch-Thai Jazz Connection, to invite his friend and famous Thai saxophonist Koh Mr. Saxman to record an album, as a tribute to the honourable ‘King of Jazz’. Some of the tracks are composed by HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej Rama IX himself.

Alexander Beets and Koh Mr. Saxman are accompanied by some of the finest musicians in European Jazz: Peter Beets, Marius Beets and Gijs Dijkhuizen.
Special feature on this album is by the Dutch Artvark Saxophone Quartet. The reknowned quartet (with Rolf Delfos, Mete Erker, Bart Wirtz and Peter Broekhuizen), performs ‘King of Jazz’ at the Amersfoort Jazz festival 2012 and during the coming tour in Thailand and Samui.

The Dutch-Thai Jazz Connection is supported by Rabobank Amersfoort Jazz, JazzNL, Samui Jazz, Bangkok City of Jazz, Observant Amersfoort, International Jazz Festival Alliance, The Royal Netherlands Embassy and The Netherlands-Thai Chamber of Commerce.
